27 December 2009 United Methodist Church Palm Springs California Bettering As We Go Part 1
Rev. Dr. Amanda Burr.

the Gospel of Luke to some of you are very familiar story now every year Jesus parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of Passover and when Jesus was 12 years old they went out as usual for the festival when the festival was ended and they started to return the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem but his parents didn't know assuming that he was in the group of travelers they went a day's journey then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends and when they did not find him they returned to Jerusalem to search for him after three days they know him in the gym sitting among the teachers listening to them and asking them questions and all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers when his parents saw him they were astonished and his mother sent him child why have you done this why have you treated us like this look your father every with great anxiety and he said to them why are you searching for me did you not know that it is necessary for me to be in my father's house but they did not understand what he said to them that he went down over them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them his mother treasured all these things in her heart and Jesus increased in wisdom and in years and in divine and human failure doesn't three you know I was talking to Marlene just before church started because she was reading the Samuel passage and I was helping her with a couple of pronunciations the word al-kitab and the word ephod and it's important for you to understand that in the scripture that we read about standing Samuel is up is a miracle be his mother Diana was having difficulty under children she could not get pregnant she went to the prop the priest eli and asked him to pray for her that she would be able to conceive the child and when she conceived and have Samuel she made a decision to dedicate to the Lord in other words she brought her son Samuel to Eli and said cute I give him to the Lord and L cannot and Hana went to visit their son who was living and being raised by the high priest eli once a year and the text says that she brought him each year a little road he was wearing in the scripture the Texas Marines that he was wearing any fall so I want you to picture Samuel the boy evangelist because an ephod is a holy periments its holy stuff like this it's like a stole we need a more elaborate as special golden threads and blew the credit has been making very special reindeers little sandal the little boy dressed in the parents of priests the boy evangelism ministry to diesel it's important that you have that image because that is exactly what who wants us to recall as we read this text today all of the people who heard this text in the first century would naturally go to that picture of the young Samuel and Jesus and the young sample would be on a car now understand this samuel was the problem would night it's the first kings of Israel Samuel it the first king by God Samuel said song we came over Israel by God Samuel said David you will became a reasonable Samuel if I most important to all the people who have ears to hear and when the first century are listening to this story and the image they now have of the boy Jesus with the words that are related by flute saying and he grew in wisdom and stature reflects the same word that would turn out in that same passage and group wisdom and its stature that isn't purpose now it is the law that all men must go to three vegetables in Jerusalem all Jewish men must go to 3,000 have to go to the Feast of the Passover the festival of the oven bread the feast of the weeks were Pentecost when the feast up the booths or Tabernacles and we must go to Jerusalem but if they live 20 miles of Jerusalem they've got it up they definitely have to go for Passover if they don't they live in Nazareth like Joseph de Marigny Jesus up to 60 miles from Jerusalem they have to go they should go at least once in their life Mary and Joseph are so devoted they are very very different in their commitment to God and their commitment to their religion they go every understand Joseph propping up yep a vacation you know so they need to make a plan if they're gonna make this trip it takes three days to get there not only got you've got to be there for a week while it because the festival lasts for seven days and then then they got them all so lets me give your gallant on vacation for a couple of weeks every year they kind of put lettuce salad and you feel that so they have to make a plan they go with family imperative lots and lots of people that's the safest way to go my debe ser Rodrik on the road it's mountainous healing country it's difficult to get from where they live to Jerusalem better don't care about a lot of people and the men can talk to each other the women can talk with each other and the kids can play with each other while they're traveling how many to remember watching you know 20 24 axor all the way it's ray movies you know Oh many people were keeping track of their kids tom they weren't on the bag well on this Caravan you're probably all drive around together and when Mary and Joseph and the rest of the family decide that they're done the Passover it's time to go home not worried about she's awesome he's an ink not with the other kids they're all have a great thought marching on their way back to Nazareth soon fun Jesus they scour the tents of keratin they scour every time they go to their cousins is Jesus here how many of you used to play outside and we're out to lap the dark I used to do that my parents would say when it's dark you need to be calm I'm sure that they can get a little bit worried when it was pitch dark out and I've been playing over the heights how swing on the swing running around myself East Indians like we did and so they realize my heavens i can't even home it's dark my parents are gonna wonder where and interestingly enough we don't know hear that that's a concern of Jesus Jesus parents notice a day's journey out that Jesus is not with it now they have the day's journey back that's two days and they have a day where they're going to be looking for him so for three days they don't know where their child is they have no idea where this 12 year old boy is you
